program presented by Easter Seals of Western Pennsylvania
On Monday, September 26, 2011 we had a visit from Easter Seals of Western Pennsylvania to address the issues of acceptance and sensitivity for persons with disabilities. The students were presented with vocabulary to identify several specific disabilities (e.g. deafness, blindness) and the tools that are used to assist people with disabilities. How to appropriately interact with persons with disabilities was discussed and modeled, as well. The program was highly interactive and engaging, providing the kindergarten children with a unique opportunity to learn about these important issues. The students had the chance to experience what it is like to read a Braille book, ride in a wheelchair, use crutches, and more. These hands-on activities were an excellent way for the young students to better understand various disabilities and the tools used to help people with disabilities.
"Awareness is the first step towards helping others with disabilities." Please follow up with your child at home about this important topic!
